Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine furcation width in molars and if the periodontal instruments adequately fitted the furcation dimension. Seventy permanent teeth (43 upper molars and 27 lower molars) were extracted, identified, washed in tap water, stored in 10% formol and photographed using a digital camera. The images were analyzed using a computer software and the inter-radicular distance was determined at three points bellow the furcation summit (A = 1 mm; B = 3 mm and C = 5 mm). The dimension of twenty-five Gracey 5-6 curets (fifty blades) from five different manufacturers was determined using a digital caliper. All the measurement were made by a single blinded and trained examiner. The results showed statistically significant differences in the inter-radicular distance among the measured points (p < 0.05 - ANOVA). The means for the curets’ blade dimensions were 0.68 ± 0.05 mm, 0.72 ± 0.04 mm and 0.77 ± 0.05 mm for the upper, intermediate and lower third, respectively, with a statistically significant difference among the manufactures (p < 0.05 - ANOVA). It can be concluded that the periodontal curets used in this study presented adequate blade dimensions to be used in molar furcation during scaling and root planning procedures.
