Abstract

This work evaluated the action of sodium alendronate and your association with granular pure hydroxyapatite in the repair of bone defects in the external cortical surface of the mandible body in twenty-seven adult rabbits. The animals were divided into three groups: a control, alendronato and a group alendronate/hydroxyapatite. The treated animals received sodium alendronate administrated orally, 1mg/kg/day, for 10 consecutive days after surgery and in the alendronate/hydroxyapatite group, the bone defect was full with hydroxyapatite. The animals were sacrificed at 14, 21, and 28 days after surgery. Histologically, as early as 14 days, bone neoformation occurred from periosteum and endosteum, which closed the defect in extension but not in depth. It was observed immature bone trabeculae surrounded by osteoblasts, ossification nuclei, and large medullar spaces filled with cellularized connective tissue. At 21 and 28 days, it was noticed the maturation of the trabeculae with progressive remodeling and reduction of medullar spaces. In the group treated with hydroxyapatite, particles remained inside the defect interposed to the bone trabeculae. Statistically, there were no differences in the treatments (p > 0.05), only in the observation periods (p = 0,000). It was concluded that the administration of sodium alendronate and your association with hydroxyapatite did not favor bone repair in this experimental model.
