Efeito do Uso de Próteses na Alimentação de Idosos

Effect of the prostheses on the elderly feeding habits

Resumo

Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de investigar, em idosos usuários de próteses totais, a presença de problemas relacionados com a mastigação durante a ingestão de certos alimentos. Foram entrevistadas 103 pessoas idosas a partir de 60 anos, que frequentaram o Centro de Reabilitação do SUS da cidade de Araraquara – SP – Brasil, no primeiro semestre do ano de 1999. Pelos resultados, constatou-se que 40% das pessoas possuíam dificuldades mastigatórias, tendo 60,2% declarado apresentar limitações ao mastigar certos tipos específicos de alimentos. Entre os entrevistados, 19,4% evitavam carnes; 15,5%, verduras cruas; 8%, legumes crus; e 7,8%, frutas. Apesar das dificuldades mastigatórias relatadas, 70,9% dos entrevistados ainda preferiam ingerir os alimentos na forma consistente.

Abstract

Aiming to investigate among elderly users of complete dentures the presence of problems related to mastication when eating certain foods, 103 elderly subjects with 60 years of age or more who attended the SUS Rehabilitation Center in the city of Araraquara – SP – Brazil, during the first semester of 1999 were interviewed. The results showed than 40% of the subjects faced difficulties during mastication, and 60.2% informed to have limitations when chewing specific kinds of food. Among the interviewees, 19.4% avoided meat, 15.5% avoided raw green vegetables, 8% raw leguminous vegetables, 7,8% fruits. In spite of the reported difficulties during mastication 70.9% of the subjects still preferred to ingest foods in consistent form.
