Abstract

Gingival mucosae of adult Cebus apella monkey were fixed for three hours in modified Karnovsky fixative containing 2.5% glutaraldehyde, 2% formaldehyde in sodium phosfate buffer at 0.1M and pH = 7.4. The specimens were refixed in 1% osmium tetroxide in 0.1M sodium phosfate buffer ai 4ºC for two hours, dehydrated in graded alcohols and embedded in Epon 812. Thick sections of 1-3 um and ultrathin sections of 40-80 nm were obtained with glass knives on a LKB ultramicrotome. The thick seclions were stained with toluidin blue solution and the grids, also stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate for exam in a Philips EM-301 electron microscope. The observations of our results permit to conclude: 1) the gengival mucosae of Cebus apella monkey present the lamellar nerve ending subepithelially and the lamellar corpuscle is localized in the papillar space of epithelium and does not contact with the basement membrane; so, many bundles of collagen fibers are present between them; 2) the nerve ending is constituted by an afferent fiber that subdivide several times and formes irregular flattened or discoidal expansions; 3) the cytoplasmic lamina of lamellac cells are thin near the terminal axon becoming large and irregular in shape when located ai the periphery portion of the corpuscle; 4) the cytopJasm of the lamellae cells is characlerized by the presence of numerous microfilaments, microtubules, mitochondria, caveolae, and rough endoplasmic reticulum; 5) desmosome type junctions are observed between the axoplasm membrane and the adjacenl cytoplasmic lamina and between the lamellac; 6) the terminal axon present a great quantity of mitochondria, myelin figures, clear vesicles and mutivesicular bodies.
