Abstract
Objective: It is proposed to identify the prevalence of smoking and drinking habits among patients diagnosed with oral lesions, as well as possible associated factors. Material and method: Analytical study, retrospective character between patients assisted by University Dental Clinic in the area of Oral Diagnosis. Dental records were analyzed and histopathological reports of patients who performed the biopsy procedure between February 2010 to July 2012. The dependent variables – harmful habits - were built by information pertaining to smokers and current drinking habits or passed. SPSS software was 19.0. Descriptive and univariate analyses were conducted by the Pearson’s Chi-square test (p ≤ 0.05). The normality of sample was investigated by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and Shapiro-Wilk (p<0 .05). Result: Of the 125 patients attended at 110 evaluation period have been included. The presence of smoker and current elitist habits or past were identified in 42 (38.2) and 21 (19.1) patients, respectively. In univariate analysis the variables statistically significant (p ≤ 0.05) associated with the habit smoker were: sex, age, type of biopsy and histopathologic diagnosis. As for the elitist habit variables were: sex and type of biopsy. Conclusion: Smoking and drinking habits have been or remain present in the life of a significant portion of individuals investigated who developed Oral lesions, being, yet, relevant with the synergy of both in the development of such injuries.
