Roughness evaluation of composite resins submitted to different finishing and polishing methods

Abstract

The purpose was to evaluate the surface roughness of composite resins submitted to different finishing and polishing methods. Material and method: Two nanoparticle composites (Filtek Supreme XT/3M Espe and Filtek Z350/3M Espe) and a microfilled composite (Durafill/Heraus Kulzer) were used. Forty-eight specimens of each composite (2 mm deep × 4 mm diameter) were prepared and light polymerized with a halogen light curing unit for 20 seconds against a mylar strip. After 24 hours, the specimens were subjected to finishing and polishing procedures (n = 8): 1) mylar strip (control group); 2) aluminum oxide discs (AO); 3) CVD diamond tip coupled to ultrasound (CVD); 4) CVD + AO; 5) an extra-fine diamond finishing tip (DF) and; 6) DF + AO. Mean surface roughness (Ra) was evaluated with a roughness meter using a cut-off value of 0.08 µm. Result: Analysis of Variance and Tukey test showed that there was a trend towards lower surface roughness for microfilled, followed by nanoparticled composite. The use of AO discs and polyester strip (control group) were the methods that led to the formation of smoother surfaces. The use of DF and CVD alone resulted in rougher surfaces. However, in general, when these finishing and polishing methods were used associated with AO discs, better surface smoothness was obtained. Conclusion: The microfilled composite presented better surface smoothness, and finishing procedures with DF or CVD should be used in association with polishing methods using OA discs.

Resumo

O propósito deste estudo foi avaliar a rugosidade superficial de resinas compostas submetidas a diferentes métodos de acabamento e polimento. Material e método: Foram utilizados dois compósitos nanoparticulados (Filtek Supreme XT/3M ESPE e Filtek Z350/3M ESPE) e um microparticulado (Durafill/ Heraus Kulzer). Foram confeccionados 48 corpos de prova de cada compósito (2 mm de profundidade × 4 mm de diâmetro), fotoativando‑os com sistema de luz halógena por 20 segundos contra uma tira de poliéster. Após 24 horas, foram realizados os procedimentos de acabamento e polimento (n = 8): CO- tira de poliéster (controle); OA- disco de óxido de alumínio; CVD- ponta de diamante CVD acoplada em ultrassom; CVD + OA; PD- ponta diamantada de acabamento extrafino, e 6 PD + OA. A rugosidade média (Ra) foi avaliada com rugosímetro, utilizando-se cut‑off de 0,08 µm. Resultado: A Análise de Variância e o Teste de Tukey mostraram tendência de menor rugosidade superficial observada para a resina microparticulada. O emprego de discos de OA e o uso da tira de poliéster (controle) foram os métodos que levaram à obtenção de superfícies mais lisas. O uso de PD e CVD, isoladamente, resultou em superfícies mais ásperas. No entanto, de modo geral, ao serem utilizadas seguidas pelos discos de OA, observou-se melhor lisura superficial. Conclusão: A resina microparticulada apresentou melhor lisura e o acabamento com PD ou CVD deve ser utilizado em associação com os métodos de polimento com discos de OA.
