Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of periodontal treatment on glycemic control in Diabetes Mellitus, through a critical review of randomized clinical trials. We performed a search of scientific literature through the PUBMED database using the keywords “Periodontal diseases and diabetes mellitus” in articles published from 1999 to 2009, including only the studies about clinical trial. Initially identified 31 studies, but after reading the 15 articles were excluded because it was not the type of study selected. Of the 16 remaining articles, only 10 complied with the criteria adopted for this study. Regarding the type of diabetes studied 03 articles dealt only with type I, 06 were related to type II and only 01 was retrieved both forms of the disease (type I and II). It was concluded that the maintenance of periodontal health can reduce the indicators for development and progression of diabetes as periodontal treatment associated with systemic or local antimicrobial therapy can influence the glycemic control of the Diabetes.
