Aim: The oral rehabilitation of a total edentulous by an implant-supported overdenture aims to re-establish the esthetic and masticatory performance. The aim of this study was to compare the masticatory performance in users of maxillary complete denture and mandibular implant-supported overdenture (n = 12) with dentulous individuals (n = 12). Materials and methods: The masticatory performance was measured by the mastication of a chewable test material, Optocal Plus (Brazilian version) during 40 cycles. The material test was submitted to a system of sieves and the particle weights in each sieve were determined for calculating the median particle size (X₅₀) using the Rosim-Rammler equation. The tests were performed two months after the first chirurgical phase when the new maxillary and mandibular complete dentures were installed (t1), and five months after, when the second chirurgical phase was performed for adaptation of the connections and installation of the mandibular implant-supported overdenture (t2). The t test for paired and unpaired samples were applied for intra- and inter-group comparison, respectively. Results: The median particle size was significantly larger for the patients with complete dentures in both evaluation (t1 and t2), meaning better masticatory performance for the dentulous individuals. Conclusions: Despite the dentulous individuals have presented a better masticatory performance than the patients rehabilitated with the maxillary complete denture and mandibular implant-supported overdenture (p = 0.001), the last one can be considered capable to improve masticatory performance in relation to maxillary and mandibular complete dentures.

Objetivo: A reabilitação oral do desdentado total com prótese total implantossuportada visa, além de restaurar a estética, restaurar a performance mastigatória. O objetivo deste estudo foi comparar a performance mastigatória entre usuários de próteses totais convencionais superiores e inferiores implantossuportadas (n = 12) e indivíduos com dentição natural completa (n = 12). Material e método: A performance mastigatória foi avaliada pela mastigação do alimento-teste Optocal Plus (versão brasileira) por 40 ciclos mastigatórios. O material mastigado foi submetido a um sistema de tamises e o peso das partículas em cada peneira foi determinado pela aplicação da equação de Rosim-Rammler, obtendo-se o tamanho mediano das partículas (X₅₀). Os testes foram realizados dois meses depois da primeira fase cirúrgica, quando foram colocadas novas próteses totais convencionais superior e inferior (t1) e, depois de cinco meses, quando foi realizada a segunda fase cirúrgica para colocação das conexões e instalação da prótese total inferior implantossuportada (t2). Os indivíduos do grupo controle realizaram o teste uma única vez. O teste t para amostras pareadas e independentes foi aplicado para comparação intra e interindivíduos, respectivamente. Resultados: O tamanho mediano das partículas foi significativamente maior para os pacientes portadores de próteses totais, tanto em t1 como em t2 em relação ao Grupo controle, denotando melhor performance mastigatória para os dentados. Conclusões: apesar de os indivíduos dentados apresentarem melhor performance mastigatória do que os pacientes reabilitados com as próteses superior convencional e inferior implantossuportada, esta pode ser considerada capaz de melhorar a performance mastigatória quando comparada a próteses totais superior e inferior convencionais.
