Abstract

The aim of the present study was the evaluation of the clinical and microbiological efficacy on the reduction of salivary microorganisms and the impact on Plaque Index, Bleeding Index and Staining Tooth Index by using a 1% chlorhexidine toothpaste. This 14 days study applied a double-blind cross-over method over 2 groups with 15 volunteers each. The first one was a Test Group that used the 1% chlorhexidine toothpaste and the second one was a Control Group that used similar formulation toothpaste without the chlorhexidine. On the baseline, day 7 and day 14 one single examiner collected the saliva samples and measured the Plaque Index, Bleeding Index and Tooth Staining Index. After each collect, the saliva samples of each volunteer were diluted, spread and incubated. The total number of colony-forming units for mL (CFU.mL–1) was counted; the percentage of reduction of salivary microorganisms was analyzed and compared between the days 7 and 0, 14 and 0, 14 and 7. The data was statistically assessed according the ANOVA test (p < 0.05). This short-term study did not reveal a significant difference between the Test Group and the Control Group among the Plaque Index, Bleeding Index and Staining Tooth Index. However, there was a significant reduction of the salivary microorganisms between the days 14 and 0, (p < 0.05). Comparing the groups (Test and Control), there was a significant difference between the days 7 and 14 (p < 0.05), this difference was higher on the day 14 (p = 0.0006)
