Abstract
As escovas dentárias necessitam de substituições regulares pois se desgastam pelo uso e diminuem a eficiência na remoção do biofilme dental. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar o índice de desgaste de escovas usadas por pré-escolares de 11 centros municipais de educação infantil do município de Ponta Grossa-PR. As duas análises empregadas para verificação do desgaste das escovas incluíram análise visual (regularidade das cerdas) e medição padronizada (índice de desgaste). Na primeira avaliação, foram observadas 855 escovas considerando a regularidade de suas cerdas. Na segunda, a divergência das cerdas foi medida com o auxílio de um paquímetro (150 x 0,05 mm). O índice de desgaste foi registrado de acordo com a equação proposta por Rawls et al.6. Os resultados mostraram que 84,3% das escovas apresentavam cerdas distorcidas, e houve associação entre as duas análises (χ2 = 515,58; p < 0,0001). Nas escovas das crianças da faixa etária de 4 a 6 anos foi observado maior desgaste das cerdas do que nas de 1 a 3 anos, sendo essa diferença estatisticamente significante (p < 0,001 – t student). O alto porcentual de deformação das escovas demonstrou que é necessário alertar educadores e pais sobre a importância da substituição periódica.

Resumo
Toothbrushes need to be replaced regularly because of the distortion they suffer by continuous use and the consequent decrease in the efficiency to remove the dental biofilm. The aim of this research was to analyze the distortion level of toothbrushes used by preschool children from 11 public school centers in Ponta Grossa, Paraná. The two analyses applied in order to verify the toothbrush distortion included visual analysis (bristles regularity) and standard measurement (wear index). In the first evaluation, 855 toothbrushes were observed according to bristles regularity. In the second, the same brushes passed through a measurement using a vernier calipers (150 x 0.05 mm). The wear index was registered according to the formula proposed by Rawls et al.6. The results showed that 84.3% of toothbrushes were distorted, and there was a association between both analyses (χ2 = 515.58; p < 0.0001). A higher level of toothbrush deformation was observed in the group of 4 to 6 year-old children than in the 1 to 3 year-old ones. This difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001 – t student). The high percentage of toothbrush deformation obtained proved the necessity of warning educators and parents how important periodical replacement.
