Abstract

Bruxism is the parafuncional activity of the mastigatory system that includes clenching or screeching of the teeth in non-funcional activities of the stomatognathic system. The great increase of the occlusal strengths generated by bruxism results in extra loads not only onto the dentition but also on all the stomatognathic system, which can cause varied effects as damages in the TMJ, muscles, periodontium and occlusion. There is not a single etiologic factor for bruxism. Therefore the different forms of treatment should be individualized for each patient. Based on the literature review, the authors have presented and discussed the main etiological factors, the consequences and the possible treatments for bruxism in children.
