Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate, by microleakage means, the storage time effect on sealing of amalgam restorations lined with different materials. Standard Class V cavities, with margins placed in dentin/cementum, were made in 80 bovine incisors roots. All materials were applied following manufactures’ instructions, defining 4 groups (n = 20): G1 – control (unlined restorations); G2 – 5 s air-dried Copalite liner (Cooley & Cooley Ltd.); G3 – 30 s air-dried Copalite liner; and G4 – Single Bond adhesive system (3M ESPE). Cavities were filled (Dispersalloy, Dentsply Caulk) and finishing and polishing performed after 24 hours. Specimens were stored in sodium azide solution at 37°C. After 7 days, 10 samples per group were randomly selected, thermal cycled and immersed in 0.5% basic fuchsin solution. Specimens were then cross sectioned and dye penetration evaluated under magnification (40x), with standard scores (0-2). Similar procedures were performed with the remaining samples, after 15 months of storage. Data were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis test (α = 0.01). In the first evaluation, restorations lined with Single Bond (G4) presented significantly lower leakage scores between all groups (p < 0.001). After the 15-month storage period, none of the tested groups presented significant improvement in the sealing ability, while G4 showed a significant increase in the dye leakage scores (p < 0.001).
