Abstract

Objective - to verify relationship between malocclusion and daily activities impacts among schoolchildren. Methods - an observational, sectional and analytic census was performed. 513 schoolchildren from the city of Pinheiro Preto - SC took part in this study. To evaluate oral conditions, clinical examinations were performed according to the methodology set forth by WHO (1997). To assess the impact on their daily activities, a modified OIDP was adopted. ABIPEME criteria were used to determine social inequalities. The statistical analysis was carried out with STATA statistical package and Chi Square and Logistic Regression tests were performed with a 5% significance level. Results - Malocclusion prevalence was 86.74%. The activities that most affected the daily performance were oral hygiene (40.9%) and food intake or enjoying food (40.4%). It were found more problems in many daily activities - smiling, emotional stability, entertainment e sleep - among patients with presence of malocclusion (p < 0.005). Conclusions - malocclusion prevalence was high; the activities that most affected the daily performance were: oral hygiene and food intake or enjoying food; and association between malocclusion prevalence and daily activities impacts was observed.
