Resumo
O objetivo deste estudo foi averiguar a necessidade de tratamento periodontal e a ocorrência de cárie radicular em pacientes acima de 40 anos que procuraram a triagem do curso de Odontologia da UNIFOR. Foram examinados 70 pacientes adultos, dentados. Para análise da necessidade de tratamento periodontal, foi utilizado o índice PSR modificado. A recessão gengival foi medida em milímetros para as faces V, L, M, D de cada dente, e o Índice de Cárie Radicular foi calculado. Foram observados redução do número médio de dentes, remanescentes (40-49 anos: 16,57; 70 ou mais anos: 10), aumento da porcentagem dos dentes acometidos por recessão gengival (40-49 anos: 49%; 70 ou mais anos: 87%), aumento da recessão gengival média (40-49 anos: 1,04 mm; 70 ou mais anos: 2,96 mm) e redução do índice de cárie radicular (40-49 anos: 0,23; 70 anos ou mais: 0,04) com o aumento da idade. Pacientes com cárie coronária apresentaram risco 1,44 vez maior de desenvolver cárie radicular. A porcentagem de sextantes acometidos com PSR 3 e 4 verdadeiros aumentou em função da idade (40-49 anos: 61%; 70 ou mais anos: 93%). Conclusão: com o aumento da idade, houve aumento da necessidade de tratamento periodontal e redução da ocorrência de cárie radicular.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of root caries and the periodontal treatment needs in patients over 40 years old who looked for dental care at Dental Department of University of Fortaleza. Seventy adult patients with natural teeth were examined. A modified PSR was used at the analysis of the periodontal disease. The gingival recession was measured in millimeters for the faces B, L, M, D of each tooth. The Root Car ies Index was calculated. It was observed that the mean number of remaining teeth decreased (40-49 years old: 16,57; 70 years old or older: 10), the percentage of teeth with gingival recession increased (40-49 years old: 49%; 70 years old or older: 87%), and the mean gingival recession increased (40-49 years old: 1,04 mm; 70 years old or older: 2,96 mm) with age. The occurrence of root caries decreased with age (RCI 0,23 for 40-49 years old and 0,04 for 70 years old or older) and the percentage of sextants recorded with PSR 3 and 4 increased with age (40-49 years old: 61%; 70 years old or older: 93%). Conclusions: the older the patient, the greater the periodontal treatment needs, and the lower the root caries index.
