Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the apical sealing of roots retrofilled with two materials and the effects of ultrasonic and bur preparation on the apical marginal dye leakage. Sixty-four extracted single-rooted human teeth were divided into four groups: A1- conventional preparation and amalgam retrofilling; A2- conventional preparation and MTA retrofilling; B1- ultrasonic preparation and amalgam retrofilling; B2- ultrasonic preparation and MTA retrofilling. Two samples of each group were used as positive and negative controls. The samples had their external surface sealed and were immersed in Indian ink for 48 h. Dye penetration was evaluated under a stereomicroscope and the statistical analysis of the results was performed. The results showed that MTA had the lowest rate of leakage with significant differences among the other groups, regardless the type of preparation.
