Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyse, comparatively, the beha-viour of the periodontal tissues of the mature teeth autotransplantated to either newly prepared or initial healing alveoli. Three adult monkeys (Cebus apella) were used weighing approximatelly 1.8 kg. In each animal, 2 teeth were transplanted immediatelly after the alveoli prepare (Group 1) and 2 teeth were transplanted 10 days after the alveoli had been prepared (Group 2). For each group, one tooth was provided for histologic analysis on the 45th day and the other one on the 90th day after the teeth autotransplantation. All of the autotransplanted teeth were splinted to the next tooth using compo-site during 7 days. In the end of that period, they had their root canals instrumented and filled with calcium hydroxide paste. The teeth destinated to histologic analysis on the 90th day after the teeth transplantation had that paste replaced on the 45th day. The tissue blocks including the autotransplanted tooth and its periodontium were submitted to a routine laboratory procedure. The tissue blocks were sectioned perpendicular to the long axis of the teeth at a thickness of 6 μm. They were stained with hematoxilyn and eosin for the histologic analysis. The results permitted to conclude that comparatively to the autotransplanted teeth to the newly prepared alveoli, the autotransplanted teeth to the initial healing alveoli: a) preserved bigger amount of periodontal ligament in the end of the experimental period; b) presented repair of the periodontal attachment tissues without ankylosis and/or replacement root resorption; and c) developed bigger amount of surface root resorption, with dominance of the repaired type.
