Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro the influence of superficial sealing on wear and roughness of an hybrid light-cured composite resin. For this purpose, 40 composite resin specimens were prepared and randomly assigned in four groups: one control group (with out sealing) and three other groups sealed with one of the studied agents (Fortify, Protect-it! and Optiguard). The samples were weighed to obtain the initial weigh (M1), then submitted to a surface roughness reading and after that taken to a brushing machine, to proceed the wear test. After brushing, the specimens were submitted to new roughness reading and then they were weighed to obtain the final weigh (M2). The wear was measured by the weigh difference of the samples, registered before and after the brushing test. After analysis of the data, a statistically significant difference was observed between the initial and final roughness for all groups. There was also a positive co-relation between superficial roughness and wear. Analyzing the sealants and comparing them to the control group, no statistically significant difference was observed in both wear and roughness tests, concluding that the use of a surface sealant did not influence the composite resin roughness and wear rate.
