Foi realizada a analise da mucosa oral de 22 indivíduos mascadores de fumo e 22 não mascadores, do sexo masculino, por meio de exame clínico e citológico, na cidade de São Luis-MA, a fim de avaliar as alterações citológicas decorrentes do uso do fumo mascado. Os dados revelaram que não houve alterações morfológicas das células epiteliais analisadas em ambos os grupos. No entanto, ressalta-se que a quantidade das células caratinizadas se mostrou maior em relação ao número de células não caratinizadas evidenciadas no grupo dos mascadores de fumo, em 100% dos casos. Com base nos resultados, conclui-se que o fumo, quando mascado, é capaz de provocar alterações na maturação das células da camada superfícial do epitelio de revestimento de mucosa oral.

It was carried out an analysis of the mucosa from 22 male patients who have been using smokeless and 22 ones who have not, by means of clinical and cytological examinition, in São Luis (MA). We have intented to evaluate the cytological changes provoked by the smokeless tobacco. The results have showed no morphological and staining pattern changes of the analysed epithelial cells in both of the groups. On the other hand, the amount of the keratinized cells have been higher than the amount of the non-keratinized ones in the experimental group, in 100% of the cases. According to these data, we have concluded that the smokeless tobacco is able to induce some changes in the maturation process of the cells from the superficial layer of the epithelial lining of the oral mucosa.
