Streptococcus mutans tem sido fortemente implicado como um dos agentes causadores da cárie dentária, sendo freqüente mente isolado da placa dentária humana. Neste estudo, examinamos a reatividade dos anticorpos IgG e IgA anti-S. mutans em amos tras de fluido gengival de crianças com e sem gengivite, a fim de medir a participação deste microrganismo na reação inflamatória envolvendo os tecidos gengivais. Nossos achados mostraram um nível aumentado de IgG anti-S. mutans no fluido gengival de crianças com gengivite.

Streptococcus mutans has been strongly implicated as one of the causative agents of dental caries and it is frequently isolated from human dental plaque. In this study, we examined the reactivities of IgA and IgG antibodies against S. mutans in samples of crevicular fluid from children with or with out gingivitis, in order to measure the participation of this microorganism in the inflammatory reaction affecting the gingival tissue. Our findings showed an increased level of IgG against Streptococcus mutans in crevicular fluid from children with gingivitis.
