Objetivou-se analisar istomorfologicamente os efeitos das técnicas de Bass e unitufo associadas ou não ao fio dental na gengiva interproximal de humanos. Trinta e dois pacientes, entre 16 e 60 anos de idade, sem alterações sistêmicas evidentes, residentes em Araraquara, foram divididos em quatro grupos instrucionais: 1. Técnica de Bass; 2. Técnica unitufo; 3. Técnica de Bass associada ao fio dental e 4. Técnica unitufo associada ao fio dental. Todos os pacientes, após terem recebido profilaxia, foram instruídos individualmente quanto a técnica de higiene bucal, que foi reforçada no 7º e 28º dia. Foram tomadas duas biópsias de gengiva interproximal da região anterior, uma no 14º e a outra no 56º dia. No total foram analisados 8 espécimes por grupo para cada tempo. Histomorfologicamente as técnicas de Bass e a unitufo com fio apresentaram comportamentos aproximados, e ligeiramente melhores do que a Bass com fio. A técnica unitufo sem fio apresentou os piores resultados. Ocorreu a predominância de um infiltrado inflamatório mononuclear em todos os casos.

The aim of this study was to analyze the histology of the interproximal gingiva in humans, after using the Bass' and single tuft brushing technique associated or not to the dental floss. Third-two patients, ranging age from 16 to 60 years old, without general health problems, living in Araraquara - SP, were placed in four groups: 1. Bass' technique alone; 2. Single tuft technique alone; 3. Bass' technique and dental floss; 4. Single tuft technique and dental floss. All patients underwent a complete dental prophylaxis, then they were indrvidualiy instructed about the oral hygene method that they should use and these instructions were reinforced at the 7th and 28th day of the study. In cisional biopsies were performed at the 14th and 56th day, to collect samples from the interproximal gingiva in the anterior regon. A total of eight especimens per group from each biopsy day were analyzed. The Bass ' technique and Single tuft technique with dental floss presented similar results, which were slightly better than the Bass' technique with dental floss from a histomorfology standpoint. The single tuft technique presented the worst results. It was seen a predomant mononuclear inflammatoly infiltrate in all cases.
