Abstract
The effects of the surgical removal of the major salivary glands on the dental plaque and periodontal disease were studied in Wistar rats. The provoked xerostomia decreased the amount dental plaque on the incisors, but plaque was unchanged on the molar teeth. Periodontal disease and bone loss provoked by a cotton ligature placed around the cervical area of the first lower molar were similar in normal and sialoadenectomized rats.
