Split-Line Patterns of the Mandible Following Section of its Compact Bone in the Rabbit

Resumo
Com a finalidade de estudar modificaçôes da estrutura fibrilar do osso compacto, reveladas pela técnica das linhas de fenda, foi praticada uma secção unilateral na compacta da face lateral do corpo da mandíbula, ao nível dos dois primeiros molares, em onze coelhos adultos. Os animais foram sacrificados nos períodos pós-operatórios de 1, 3, 4, 8 e 17 meses, suas mandíbulas foram removidas, maceradas e descalcificadas. Unhas de fenda foram feitas em toda a superfície lateral do corpo de cada hemimandíbula (uma operada, outra controle). A secção interrompeu "trajetórias de força" da mandíbula, que correspondem à disposição das fibras colágenas identificada pelas linhas de fenda. Uma desorganização da orientação da estrutura fibrilar foi notada a partir do 38º mês, quando as linhas se mostraram irregulares, sem nenhum padrão definido. Nos períodos de 8 a 17 meses as linhas, ainda com certa desorganização, já se aproximavam bastante do padrão normal.

Abstract
With the aim of analysing changes in the fibrous structure of the compact bone, as revealed by the split-line technique, unilateral section of this bone in the mandibular hody was performed in eleven adult rabbits. At postoperative periods of 1, 3, 4, 8 and 17 months the animals were killed, their mandibles were removed, cleaned and then decalcified. Split-lines were made on the lateral surface of hoth the control and the operated side of the mandible. Bone section discontinued "force trajectories", which correspond to the arrangement of collagen fibers in the mandible as identified by split-line patterns. Alterafion in the fibrous structure orientation were noticed from the third month on, when the split-lines showed to be entangled and disorganized. At the later periods of eighf and 17 months some disorganization was still present, but the split-lines were much close to the normal pattern.
