Abstract
The influence of carrot, added to a cariogenic diet, in the amount of dental plaque and number of S.mutans was studied in the molar teeth of the rato Twenty days old rats were divided into three groups and fed with normal powdered diet, cariogenic diet and cariogenic diet containing 18% of carrot. The groups treated with cariogenic diet had a similar increase in the number of S.mutans in relation to the control group, independently of containing or not carrot. Animals fed with cariogenic diet containing carrot had more plaque than the controls, nevertheless the plaque index was significantly lower than that found in rats fed with cariogenic dietalone.
