Interelations between some finished procedures of gengival margins of class II dental amalgam restorations and marginal microleakage

Resumo
Foi realizada uma pesquisa "in vitro" para avaliar a infiltração marginal de restaurações a amálgama de Classe II MOD, nas quais, na face mesial, a parede gengival recebeu um acabamento com seis diferentes instrumentos rotatórios e um manual. A face distal sem acabamento foi comparada à mesial a fim de se verificar o grau de infiltração marginal. Concluímos que: a infiltração marginal ocorreu em todosos corpos de prova; o acabamento da parede gengival não impede a infiltração marginal; e que não existiu variação estatisticamente significante entre os sete tipos de instrumentos utilizados no acabamento.

Abstract
An in vitro study was undertaken to evalunte the marginal microleakage of class (MOD) dental amalgam restorations. The gingival margins at the mesial surfaces were finished through 7 different ways: 6 rotating cutting instruments and one hand instrument. Controls were obtained with the gingival margins at the distal surfaces of the sarne specimen which did not receive any special finishing procedure. Findings indicated that: 1 - marginal microleakage occurred in all specimens; 2 - the finishing procedures used for the gingival margins failed to inhibit marginal microleakage; 3 - statistical analysis showed significant differences among the 7 instruments used for the finishing procedures.
