Abstract

To call attention to the occurrence of additional mineralization in the styloid process, 501 dried skulls from adult Brazilian residents were reviewed. Ninety-eight (19.56%) of them were found to show evidence of elongation of the styloid process (greater than 30mm). Of these abnormalities, about half (48. 98%) were bilateral. The largest number of abnormalities were found in the 30mm to 35mm range. Clinicians should be aware with the possible clinical manifestations of this phenomenon (stylo-stylohyoid or Eagle's syndrome) to make a proper diagnosis and to avoid complications.
