Abstract

The mesio-distal distance, height of cusps and depth of the mesial, central and distal sulci of 112 first lower molar teeth, of 25-day old albino rats, were comparatively analysed. The mothers and nursings were treated with fluorated water in the concentrations of 0.8-0.9 ppmF (T1) 25 ppmF (T2) 50 ppmF (T3) or 100 ppmF (T4), during the growth periods (25 to 120 days), mating, pregnancy and lactation. ln the stablished experimental conditions and based on statislical analysis we concluded that 1) the treatments presented different effects upon the studied measurements; 2) the treatment T2 (25 ppmF) resulted, in general, in the highest average values and the least observed average values were sistematically associated to treatment T4 (100 ppmF); 3) the differences between treatments were statistically significant only on the central and distal sulci, where statistical significance was not observed among treatments; 4) only for the mesio-distal distance statistically significant differences were noted, among sexes, related to the effect of treatments. The present work, in relation to the variables studied, suggests the need of new researches about the effects of fluoride on the dental morphology and its possible interaction wilh genetic factors.
