Abstract
The study was designed in order to verify if the maintenance of vital periodontal remnants on the surface root is essential for the healing process of replanted teeth. Dog teeth were extracted and submitted to pulp extirpation and root canal filling with a calcium hydroxide paste. Then, one group of teeth was immersed in saline solution for one hour before the replantation (control group). Teeth of the experimental group were immersed in 5% sodium hypochlorite solution for one hour followed immersion in 10% acid citric for one minute, and brief wash in saline before to be reimplanted. The histological analysis showed that the epithelial attachment was below the cement-enamel junction, for both groups. Nevertheless, teeth treated by hypochlorite and citric-acid (the experimental group) showed new functionally oriented periodontal fibers, newly apposed cement and bone and was related to less frequent occurrence of root ankylosis and resorption than the contrai specimens.
