The effect of salivary glands extirpation, duct ligation, and thyroxine administration on the emergence time and eruption rate of teeth in rats

Resumo
Motivados pela possÃvel interação funcional das glândulas tireóide e salivares e também pela ação das mesmas sobre o desenvolvimento dental, os autores planejaram uma pesquisa para verificar o efeito da cirurgia das glândulas salivares (ablação total e ligadura dos ductos) e da administração de tiroxina sobre o crescimento do incisivo e a erupção do molar. Quarenta e oito ratos albinos, machos, foram divididos em seis grupos de oito animais cada: Controle; Tiroxina; Ducto-atado; Salivariadenoprivo; Ducto-atado + tiroxina; Salivariadenoprivo + tiroxina. Com exceção dos animais do grupo controle, todos os demais foram operados aos 15 dias de vida e/ou tratados com tiroxina a partir da mesma data. A sialoadenectomia e a ducto-atadura retardaram a época da erupção do terceiro molar, mas não alteraram a velocidade de crescimento do incisivo. A tiroxina, na dose de 0,5 mcg por dia, corrigiu a época da erupção do terceiro molar, alterada pela sialoadenectomia e pela ducto-atadura.

Abstract
The possible functional interaction between the thyroid and salivary glands and the action of these glands upon the dental development, motivated the authors to search out the effect of salivary glands extirpation and/or duct-ligation and thyroxine injection on the incisor growth and molar emergence time. Forty-eight male albino rats were divided into six groups of eight animals each: Control, Thyroxine; Duct-Ligated; Salivariadenectomized; Duct-Ligated + Thyroxine; Salivariadenectomized + Thyroxineo The surgery was performed on the 15th day of life and thyroxine was given from 15th through the 38th day. The sialoadenectomy and duct-ligation decreased the emergence time of the third molar, but did not change the eruption rate of the continuous growing incisor tooth. The daily injection of thyroxine, in a dosage of 0.5 mcg, corrected the emergence time of the molar altered by sialoadenectomy and duct-ligation.
