Abstract

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the clinical effects of topical application of a 2% chlorhexidine digluconate solution, unitufted brush and a soft tooth brush. Twenty-seven patients, 25 to 55 years of age, that exhibited, at least, one molar teeth with furcation involvement were selected. After the completion of periodontal active therapy, the patients were assigned to one of three groups: apply the Bass technique while brushing with a soft tooth brush and dental floss (group I), unitufted brush in the furcation areas (group II) and chlorhexidine with a modified brush (group III). The selected sites were exposed to a base line examination at which the following parameters were recorded: plaque index, gingivitis index, probing pocket depth and probing attachment level. Re-examinations were performed monthly during four months. The results demonstrate that there was a statistically significant reduction in the clinical parameters after 4 months, analyzing the 3 groups. When the groups are com pared, group III reduced gingivitis and plaque index greater than groups I and II. The findings suggest that topical aplication of a 2% chlorhexidine solution, in furcation involvement sites, is beneficial for periodontal health.
