Abstract

In developing countries, one is considered elderly when he or she reaches 60 years of age. The elderly represent about 9% of the total Brazilian population. The aim of this work was to present a literature review about the treatment provided by oral and maxillofacial surgeons to the elderly, and to define the epidemiologic profile of the aged treated by the oral and maxillofacial surgery residency service of Maringá State University, Brazil, in the period from 2002 to 2009. 1630 patient forms were reviewed, and a total of 150 were from elderly patients. 106 patients presented with some type of oral and maxillofacial injury. In most of the cases, care was provided via the Brazilian Public Health System, and falls were the main cause of consultation. In 44 cases surgical intervention was not necessary. This work aimed to emphasize the issue, showing the importance of studies on Gerontology associated to oral and maxillofacial surgery.
