Conhecimento de professores do ensino fundamental (Ciclo II) de Araraquara sobre cárie dentária e doença periodontal

Knowledge of primary-school teachers of Araraquara about dental caries and periodontal disease

Resumo

Considerando o importante papel do ambiente escolar sobre a educação em saúde dos escolares, o presente trabalho observou, mediante a aplicação de questionário, o conhecimento sobre etiologia, evolução e prevenção da cárie dentária e doença periodontal, de professores de Ciências (n = 75) e das demais disciplinas ministradas no Ensino Fundamental - Ciclo II (n = 137) da rede pública de Araraquara - SP. Verificou-se que apenas 2,2% do Ciclo II e 16,3% do Ciclo II - Ciências responderam adequadamente sobre a placa bacteriana; a maioria dos entrevistados dos Ciclos II e II - Ciências associou a cárie apenas à má higiene (58,5% e 65,7%, respectivamente); somente um pequeno percentual dos professores dos dois grupos mencionou a etiologia da cárie como sendo multifatorial - açúcares + bactérias + má higiene (Ciclo II - 6,9% / Ciclo II - Ciências - 2,8%); 36,5% dos professores avaliados do Ciclo II e 42,7% do Ciclo II - Ciências revelaram saber o que é a doença periodontal, e destes, a maioria mencionou o sangramento e a inflamação gengival como manifestações da doença periodontal; dos professores que responderam saber qual a função do flúor (Ciclo II - 80,3%; Ciclo II - Ciências - 82,7%), os maiores índices de respostas foram proteger/fortalecer o esmalte dental contra os ácidos das bactérias (Ciclo II - 41,8%; Ciclo II - Ciências - 50,0%) e prevenir o aparecimento de cárie (Ciclo II - 33,6%; Ciclo II - Ciências - 37,1%). Concluiu-se que tanto os professores do Ciclo II - Ciências quanto os demais professores do Ciclo II apresentaram conhecimento sobre a cárie dentária e a doença periodontal deficiente.

Abstract

Considering the important role of the scholar environment on scholar’s education in health, the present work observed, by the application of a questionnaire, the knowledge of Science teachers - Cycle II science - (n = 75) and teachers from other disciplines ministered in primary school - Cycle II - of Araraquara - SP public schools regarding etiology, development and prevention of dental caries and periodontal disease. It was verified that only 2.2% of Cycle II, and 16.3% of Cycle II - science teachers answered correctly questions about bacterial plaque; most of interviewees from Cycle II and Cycle II - science associated caries with bad hygiene (58.5% e 65.7%, respectively); only a small percentage of teachers from both groups mentioned the caries etiology as being multifactorial - sugars + bacteria + bad hygiene (Cycle II - 6.9% / Cycle II - science - 2.8%); 36.5% of the Cycle II and 42.7% of the Cycle II - science teachers revealed knowledge about what it is periodontal disease, and most of them mentioned bleeding and gingival inflammation as manifestations of periodontal disease; considering teachers that answered that they had knowledge about the function of fluoride (Cycle II - 80.3%; Cycle II - science - 82.7%), the highest rates of answers were: protect/fortify dental enamel against bacterial acids (Cycle II - 41.8%; Cycle II - science - 50.0%) and prevent the emergence of dental caries (Cycle II - 33.6%; Cycle II - science - 37.1%). It was concluded that both the Cycle II - science and the others Cycle II teachers presented a deficient knowledge about dental caries and periodontal disease.
