Abstract

The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of ART restorations in children assisted in the Clinic of Cariology at UFPB. Hundred and seven ART restorations were evaluated considering the number of restored faces, type of material, dentition, pos-operative sensibility and the acceptance of this technique by patients. Caries experience after 6, 12 and 18 months were also surveyed. Previously the evaluation, dental brushing was carried out and DMFT and dmft was determined by a calibrated examiner (Kappa = 0.87). It was observed that 51.9% of the restorations were present without any treatment need. The mean DMFT and dmft in the initial and final exams showed no significant differences (Wilcoxon test, p > 0.05). No difference was also observed for materials employed in the technique, dentition and number of involved faces (Chi-squared, p > 0.05). It was verified a low postoperative sensibility and a high acceptance for the technique regardless dentition and material used. It can be concluded that even though the caries indexes did not increase during the study, the clinical performance of the restorations ART was low (< 60% without repair need) and influenced by dentition. The materials used presented similar clinical performance, the dentition and number of involved faces had no influence in the clinical ART performance and most of the patients reported low postoperative sensibility and high acceptance for this technique.
