Abstract

Metal-ceramic bond has been and still is considered the factor responsible for successful metaloceramic restorations. The aim of this study was to assess the metal/ceramic bond strength between a Ni-Cr-Mo-Ti based alloy (Tilite) and a ceramic system (Will-Ceram) by shear testing. Forty metal patterns (15.0 x 20.0 x 6.5 mm) were made, as a function of absence or presence of previous oxidation for different periods of time according to the experimental groups: Group 1: without previous oxidation; Group 2: kept for 0 minute at final temperature of previous oxidation; Group 3: kept for 2 minutes and Group 4: kept for 5 minutes. On the metallic standards the ceramic system was applied (Will-Ceram). The test was performed in a universal test machine (200 kgf/500 g/ V = 0.5 mm.min–1). The original values (kgf.cm–2) were submitted to the analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey test at 5%, from which the following observations were made: Group 1 presented the highest shear resistance values (220.60), and did not differ statistically from Group 2 (201.70) (P < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences between Groups 2 (201.70) and 3 (171.60) (P > 0.05). Group 4 presented the lowest shear resistance values (152.40), and did not differ statistically from Group 3 (171.60) (P < 0.05). Further studies are required to obtain better knowledge about the behavior of these materials.
