Resumo
Diversos procedimentos clínicos e laboratoriais são necessários durante a reabilitação com próteses totais, e a instalação de novas próteses é considerada uma etapa de significante relevância no tratamento. O objetivo deste artigo foi realizar uma revisão sobre os procedimentos clínicos para a instalação de próteses totais, entre eles: a avaliação da extensão de bordas, da oclusão, de áreas de compressão, da estética e da fonética, da retenção, da estabilidade e do suporte e as instruções de higienização ao paciente. Além disso, o ajuste e o período subseqüente à instalação também foram abordados, pois podem influenciar favorável ou desfavoravelmente na aceitação das próteses pelo paciente. Ainda, um controle contínuo do paciente pelo profissional deve ser considerado, uma vez que não é possível determinar a tolerância biológica de cada indivíduo. Assim, a instalação torna-se uma importante fase para o sucesso do tratamento reabilitador com próteses totais.
