Abstract

Literature has recorded that anti-inflammatory drugs have the potential to alterate periodontal tissue in healthy as well as in disease conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluated the effect of meloxican on alveolar bone loss of induced periodontal disease on rats. The periodontal disease was induced through ligature on the lower right first molars. The rats were ramdomly assigned to one out of 2 groups (control and test) with 15 animals each; we use a split-mouth methodology so we could obtained a total of 15 groups. 6 controls groups didn’t receive any medication the other 6 test group received a daily 7,5 mg/Kg oral dose. Five animals were sacrificed 5, 15 and 30 days after the beginins of the study. The results showed that it was radiographically found after ligature placement, smaller alveolar bone loss occurs in the 5 days group, compared to the 15 and 30 days groups. The 30 days group displayed the greatest bone loss compared to the others. The alveolar bone loss found in the test group meloxican was smaller than that found in the control group (no medication). We conclude thus that the meloxican, a non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug sets its action on the transitional stage between acute and chronic inflammatory response, diminishing the intensity of ligature induced periodontal disease.
