Abstract

The superficial roughness of the dental amalgam was analysed regarding the treatment of the surface with acid solutions and conditioning time. The statistic model used was the analysis of variance (ANOVA). In our studies we used ninety amalgam samples (Dispersalloy) with a diameter of 5.3 mm and a depth of 1.5 mm. The samples were stored for 168 hours or seven days in a regulated temperature of 37º ± 1º C and under a relative humidity of 95 ± 5%. After this, the samples were submited to mediate metallographic finishing and polishing. After polishing, each sample was submited to three different types of superficial roughness examinations. Right after, they were stored at a temperature of 37º ± 1º C, for four days. Then, the samples were submited to a superficial treatment with 3 acids. New examinations were then carried out. The results showed that there was no significant variability for each one of the factors, acid and time, as well as for their interaction, at a level of 5%, and that when the surfaces were appropriately polished, they were not influenced by the acid solutions used in our research.
