Abstract

The proposition of the present study was to evaluate the occurrence and the intensity of the microinfiltration in class V preparations restored with amalgam and exposed to a 2 percent staining solution of Rhodamine B. Forty extracted human molars, previously cleaned, received class V preparations on their buccal and lingual aspects. All the sample teeth were restored by using amalgam (Permite C) and the group was divided into four other sub-groups where one of them was taken as control (without lining), while the remaining three sub-groups received different lining agents, i.e., a cavity resinous varnish (Cavitine), a glass ionomer (Vitrebond) and an adhesive (Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus). Based on the obtained results, it was concluded that: none of the lining materials was able to fully seal the cavity so to avoid penetration of the staining; both the sub-group receiving varnish and the con trol sub-group allowed highest penetrations in recent amalgam fillings; when compared to both the varnish and the control sub-groups, ionomer and adhesive showed significantly better ability to blockmarginal infiltration, with slight superiority if compared to the ionomer sub-group.
