Abstract

The correlation between a stained plaque index and histological gingival conditions was evaluated on 40 patients, male and female, who sought periodontal treatment. The clinical criteria of the index were applied on the vestibular surfaces of the anterior teeth, where biopsies were taken to obtain 10 specimens for each degree. The sections were analysed morthometrically and the correlation with clinical results was done through the Kappa statistical model. The results showed that: there was a positive correlation between the histological results and the criteria of the stained plaque index; the greatest discrepancies were encountered for degrees 0 and 1 of the stained plaque index, with a correlation of 60%; degree 2 of the stained plaque index presented the greatest histological correlation of 90%; the stained plaque index is not an ideal means of monitoring gingival conditions.
