Abstract

The biocompatibility of a resorcin-formaldehyde resin was studied after subcutaneous implantation in rats. The implants, poliethylene tubes filled with the resin, polimerized or as paste, were inserted into dorsal surgical pockets, and the animals sacrificed 7, 15, 30 and 60 days alter. Serial sections of the skin, stained with HE, showed that the subcutaneous tissue, after an intense inflammatory reaction and necrosis at 7days presented a tendency for healing in the subsequent periods with the organization of a fibrous capsule surrouding the tubes. When the resin flowed out from the tube, an event more frequent when inserted as a paste, an intense giant cell reaction was observed surrounding the resin.
