Abstract

The biocompatibility of a resorcin-formaldehyde resin was studied after filling of dental cavities in rats. Cavities were prepared in the upper tirst molars, being left one filled up with the resin and polimerized; the right one, used as control, received pulpal protection with calcium hydroxide cement (Dycal) and was restored with amalgam. The animals were sacrificed 7, 15, 30 and 60 days after these procedures. Serial sections of the teeth and skin, stained with HE, showed that when the resin was applied in molar cavities with a dentin barrier separating it from the pulp, the pulpal inflammatory reaction was usually concurrent with reactional dentin formation. ln most cases the dentin formation was intense, obliterating the pulp cavity of the tirst molar. These results suggested that the resin, in cavities with a dentin barrier and not causing occlusal trauma, induced only a mild irritation of the pulp yielding the formation of reactional dentin.
