Abstract

The skin of the dorsal region of 24 rats was submitted to an experimental incision and discontinuously sutured with 5-0 mononylon thread. The distance between the suture points was either 0.6 cm (group I) or 0.3 cm (group II). The animals were sacrificed at 1, 3, 6, and 9 post-operative days for histological analysis of the cicatricial area. At the same periods of time also and just after surgery, pictures were taken for clinical analysis. The clinical and histological results showed that distance of 0.3 cm when compared to that of 0.6 cm: 1) increases the edema at the first day; 2) may produce a deiscence on the wound edges from the third post-operative day on; 3) displays similar results at 6 and 9 post-operative days.
