Abstract

The effect of nicotinic acid added in the diet or administered by gastric intubation on the incidence of dental caries in rats submitted to cariogenic diet and laboratory chow was studied. Rats received nicotinic acid added in the cariogenic diet or in laboratory chow showed an increase in the caries incidence compared to the controls; however the results were not statistically significant. On the other hand, rats which received nicotinic acid by gastric intubation and were fed in either cariogenic diet or laboratory chow showed a statistically significant reduction in their caries incidence, when compared to the nontreated controls. The results showed that nicotinic acid has a systemic action on the incidence of dental caries; however the mechanism by which this vitamin has decreased the incidence of dental caries is yet unknown.
