Correlação entre os critérios clínicos do índice de placa e a condição histológica dos tecidos gengivais
Correlation between the clinics criterions of the plaque index and the histologic condition of the gengival tissues

Resumo
Tendo em vista a importância da placa dental no aparecimento e desenvolvimento da doença periodontal e o fato de ter sido levantada a hipótese de que a placa possa ser melhor indicador clínico da saúde gengival, decidiu-se testar a correlação entre os critérios do índice de Placa de SILNESS & LOE em relação à inflamação tecidual avaliada histologicamente. Foi aplicado o índice de Placa de SILNESS & LOE e realizadas biópsias em quarenta pacientes. Nos espécimes obtidos procedeu-se à análise histológica, chegando-se as seguintes conclusões: 1 - houve uma corelação positiva entre os graus do índice de Placa (I. PI.) e os graus de inflamação gengival; 2 - os maiores níveis de concordância foram encontrados para os graus 2 e 3 do índice de Placa, que exibiram uma correlação positiva em 90% dos casos; 3 - houve uma diminuição dos níveis de concordância com a diminuição dos graus do índice de Placa, respectivamente de 80% para o grau 1 e 60% para o grau 0; 4 - o indice de Placa pode ser utilizado como um determinante clínico das condições histológicas dos tecidos gengivais, com maior nrvel de confiança em relação direta com o aumento de seus graus.

Abstract
Aiming at the importance of the dental plaque on the setting and development of periodontal disease and considering the hypothesis that plaque-may be the best clinical indicator of gingival status, we decided to study the relationship between the criteria of the Plaque Index from SILNESS and LOE and the tissue inflammation histologically observed. The Plaque Index from SILNESS and LOE was applied to 40 patients and biopsy specimens were taken. Within the limits of the experimental conditions of this study, we can conclude that: 1 - there was a positive relationship between the scores of the Plaque Index (PI. I.) and the gingival inflammation ratings; 2 - the highest levels of concordance were found related to scores 2 and 3 of the Plaque Index, which showed a positive relation in 90% of the cases; 3 - there was a decrease in concordance levels as the Plaque Index scores decreased, 80% to score 1 and 60% to score 0, respectively; 4 - the Plaque Index can be used as a clinical sign ofthe histological status of gingival tissues, with greater acuracy as the scores increase.
