Abstract

The authors analysed histologically, after rats subcutaneous connective tissue and intraosseous implants, tissue reactíon after contact with "Bone wax" (ETHICON). Submandibular lymphnodes of these rats were also analysed. Twenty-one albino rats received subcutaneous implants of polyethilene tubes filled wíth "Bone wax", as well as implants of the named material in bone cavity previously prepared in the mandible. An equal number of rats received only implants of polyethilene tubes, constituting the control group. The animals were sacrifíced after 5, 10, 30, 60, 90, 180 and 360 post-operatíve days, and the sections containing implants and the adjoining tissues, as well as the lymphnode chains, were fixed in 10% formalin and receíved routine laboratory treatment After paraffin embeddíng, semiserially sections were made and stained with hematoxylin and eosin for morphological studies. Accordíng to the results obtained, the conclusions were: a) the "Bone wax" was not absorbed up to the period of 360 days, b) foreign body reaction occurred in both implant areas, c) a fibrosis capsule was formed in contact with the material and d) there was evidence of immune response.
