Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze histologically the dentin/enamel or dentin/cementum fragments influence on the chronology of wound healing of tooth extraction. Eighty-four young albino rats were used. After extracting the maxillary right incisors of all the rats, three experimental groups were formed: the control group and the groups that received intra-alveolar implantation of fragments of dentin/enamel or dentin/cementum. The rats were sacrificed at 1, 3, 6, 9, 15, 21, and 40 post-operative days following tooth extraction. The obtained pieces were submitted to routine laboratorial procedures until getting pieces stained with hematoxylin and eosin. It was concluded that fragments of dentin/enamel and dentil/cementum delay severely the wound healing of the dental socket. Dentin/enamel fragments act as foreign body and it tends to be eliminated through the dental socket.
